I Made Chakra: Cultivating Sustainable Agriculture and Preserving Balinese Heritage.
I Made Chakra Widia is a prominent Balinese permaculture practitioner, environmental educator, and sustainability advocate. Born in 1973 into a rice-farming family near Ubud, Bali, his early life was deeply rooted in traditional, organic agricultural practices. His upbringing instilled a profound respect for nature and a commitment to sustainable living. In 2012, Chakra founded the Tri Hita Karana Bali Foundation, named after the Balinese philosophy emphasizing harmony among people, nature, and spirituality. The foundation focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness in Bali. Through this organization, Chakra has been instrumental in implementing permaculture techniques, such as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), and encouraging using bio-fertilizers and compost to reduce reliance on chemical inputs.

Chakra’s work extends beyond agriculture; he integrates permaculture principles into various aspects of daily life. His home serves as a model for sustainable living, featuring elements like bamboo construction, rainwater harvesting systems, and walls made from recycled materials. Additionally, he has led projects to build micro-hydropower stations in remote villages, providing essential services like lighting and refrigeration.
A strong advocate for community empowerment, Chakra collaborates with local farmers, educates communities on sustainable practices, and partners with organizations like Surge for Water to address environmental challenges. His holistic approach to sustainability, deeply rooted in Balinese traditions, continues to inspire efforts toward ecological balance and community well-being.
